About SNIPSA

SNIPSA (Spay Neuter Injectable Pet Services for Animals) is a compassionate organization formed by a dedicated group of veterinarians and animal lovers who are passionate about helping homeless and unwanted animals in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Unlike traditional shelters, SNIPSA does not have a standing shelter. Instead, it operates through a core group of volunteers who foster and rehabilitate animals in their homes. This unique approach allows SNIPSA to provide personalized care and gain a deeper understanding of each animal’s behavior and needs, ultimately ensuring the best match for adoption. Since its incorporation in 2006, SNIPSA has successfully re-homed over 20,000 animals, transforming lives in the process.

Rescuing Animals in Need

One of SNIPSA’s primary goals is to rescue animals that are at risk of euthanasia in local kill shelters. Each year, thousands of animals are impounded by Animal Care Services, and many of them are deemed “unadoptable” or face an imminent fate due to overcrowding. In 2023, over 30,000 animals were taken in by Animal Care Services, with nearly 5,000 facing euthanasia. Additionally, more than 21,000 carcasses were recovered from the streets of San Antonio. These numbers continue to rise, which makes SNIPSA’s work more crucial than ever. By making weekly trips to area shelters, SNIPSA rescues animals whose “time is up,” providing them with a second chance at life. Many of these animals suffer from neglect, injuries, diseases, or have been used for breeding, but SNIPSA offers hope for a brighter future.

Providing Comprehensive Medical Care

Once rescued, animals brought into SNIPSA’s care are given the medical attention they need to recover and thrive. Many of these animals require extensive medical treatments, including surgeries, vaccinations, and long-term care to treat conditions like heartworm, fractures, mange, and malnutrition. While the rehabilitation process is often lengthy and expensive, SNIPSA is dedicated to going the extra mile to ensure each animal is restored to health and prepared for adoption. Their commitment to providing necessary medical care is evident in their tireless work to nurse animals back to health and give them a chance at a happy life.

Combatting Overpopulation with Spay/Neuter Programs

In addition to rescuing animals, SNIPSA is deeply committed to addressing the root cause of the overpopulation problem: unplanned litters. Through their spay/neuter initiatives, they are actively working to reduce the number of unwanted animals in San Antonio. The organization offers free spay/neuter services to underserved communities, targeting areas where there is the most need. One of SNIPSA’s most impactful programs is the Big Fix clinics, which are held several times a year. These large-scale events allow SNIPSA to perform sterilization surgeries on over 500 dogs and cats in a single day. In addition to spaying and neutering, animals also receive vaccinations and microchips to improve their health and chances of being reunited with their owners if lost.

Community Impact: Transforming Lives

SNIPSA’s impact extends far beyond individual animal rescues. By reducing the number of unwanted litters through their spay/neuter programs, SNIPSA helps prevent future generations of animals from facing the harsh realities of shelter life or being abandoned on the streets. Their community outreach efforts also reduce the financial burden on taxpayers, as fewer animals end up in city shelters or require euthanasia. The organization’s community-centered approach helps to transform San Antonio’s neighborhoods into safer and healthier places for both pets and their owners.

A Team Dedicated to Change

SNIPSA has grown from its humble beginnings into a well-respected organization in San Antonio, thanks to the dedication of its staff, volunteers, and supporters. Volunteers are at the heart of SNIPSA’s mission, with individuals fostering animals in their homes and helping with adoption events and community outreach programs. The organization also relies on generous donations from the public, which fund its medical care and spay/neuter initiatives. With over 27,500 successful spay/neuter surgeries performed, SNIPSA is making a significant difference in the community, and they remain committed to expanding their efforts to further reduce the number of unwanted animals in the city.
