The Beginning of Nightly Spirits: A Shared Passion for the Paranormal

Nightly Spirits was born in 2012, founded by two roommates with a deep love for the paranormal. After both working in the private sector in Washington, D.C., we realized that we could bring something fresh and exciting to the world of ghost tours. Having toured many ghostly destinations across the country, we felt that the typical tours lacked the entertainment and excitement we were craving. So, we set out to create something unique—a tour experience that could appeal to die-hard ghost hunters, casual believers, and even the non-believers.

The Segway Experiment: A Ghost-Hunting Failure

Our journey to create the perfect ghost tour wasn’t without its bumps along the way. At first, we thought it would be a fun idea to conduct the tours using Segways, combining the thrill of riding with the mystery of ghost hunting. However, after careful consideration (and a bit of laughter), we quickly realized that it might not be the best plan. We didn’t want to become infamous for two ghost hunters meeting a tragic end on Segways. We decided it was best to abandon the Segway idea and focus on creating a tour experience that was safe, fun, and truly spooky.

The White House Tour: Crafting Our Signature Experience

After almost a year of preparation, we were ready to launch our first official tour. This included studying for a tour guide exam, researching local ghost stories, delving into the history of D.C., and of course, sampling the spirits (in more ways than one). The culmination of all this effort was our signature White House tour—a deep dive into one of the most haunted and historically rich areas of Washington, D.C. From the eerie stories to the captivating history, we designed this tour to engage and thrill guests of all backgrounds.

Our Humble Beginning: The First Tour

We began with modest expectations, offering just one tour a week on Saturdays. Our first tour was unforgettable, but not exactly in the way we had hoped. We sold a grand total of two tickets! Despite the small turnout, we were determined to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. In an attempt to make things less awkward for the guests, one of us came up with a clever idea: we asked his girlfriend (who is now his wife) to join the tour and pretend to be on a date with his roommate. The move was a hit, and it made the guests feel more comfortable. Looking back, it’s a funny reminder of how far we’ve come since that first tour.
