About Us – Handlebar J
Scottsdale’s Original Rib House & Saloon
Handlebar J, proudly known as “Scottsdale’s Original Rib House” and saloon, has been a local treasure since 1975, with the Herndon family continuing to operate it to this day. Originally established in 1966 as “Wild Bill’s” by Wild Bill Byrd, the building has evolved with Scottsdale, surviving through the years as one of the few remaining western-style saloons.
The Wild Bill’s Era
Built in the early 1960s, “Wild Bill’s” was a popular honky-tonk and dancehall in North Scottsdale, a region then populated by little more than tumbleweeds, rattlesnakes, and cowboys. Wild Bill’s was known for its live music, including performances by an unknown Waylon Jennings, who became a regular in the club. One famous story involves Wild Bill’s attempt to demonstrate gun twirling, leading to a bullet hole in the dance floor post—miraculously, no one was hurt!
A Change in Ownership
In 1966, after tax issues forced Wild Bill to sell, George and Joannie Lautz (known for George’s iconic handlebar mustache) took over the establishment, renaming it Handlebar J. The Lautz’s were previous managers of the Lulu Belle restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale. Shortly after purchasing HBJ, George, a skilled guitarist, teamed up with Brick Herndon, a talented bass player, to form the “Country Score” house band, setting the stage for the Handlebar J’s unique identity as a live music venue serving BBQ ribs and more.
The Herndon Legacy
By 1975, George and Joannie Lautz decided to move on, and the Herndon family took the reins. Gwen and Brick Herndon, with the help of Gwen’s brother John Lattimore, officially took ownership. The Handlebar J celebrated its grand opening on September 15, 1975. Tragically, in 1981, Brick passed away after a battle with cancer, but Gwen kept the business alive, managing it with unshakable determination.
A Family Affair
Gwen’s three sons—Ray, Rick, and Ron—became key figures in the business, performing regularly with the family’s band, The Herndon Brothers. Ray Herndon’s music career, particularly with Lyle Lovett’s Large Band and McBride and the Ride, helped keep Handlebar J in the spotlight. Gwen continued to work tirelessly, from managing staff to serving guests and even cooking late-night meals. Her commitment was a key part of the venue’s enduring success.
A Hub for Celebrities
Over the years, Handlebar J has hosted many famous guests, including Dick Van Dyke, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Gill, Kris Kristofferson, Hank Williams Jr., and Waylon Jennings. Celebrities have been known to jump on stage with the Herndon Brothers, creating unforgettable moments. In 2003 and 2004, Jessi Colter and Ray Herndon hosted “The Outlaw Connection,” which helped launch SIRIUS radio’s “Outlaw Channel.”
Awards & Recognition
In 2007, Handlebar J and the Herndon family were inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (AMEHOF), cementing their place as a key part of Arizona’s musical legacy.
A Legacy of Great Food & Music
Handlebar J is renowned not only for its delicious BBQ ribs, steaks, burgers, and fried chicken but also for its rich live music offerings. While country music remains a staple, the venue occasionally hosts blues, jazz, and rock-n-roll performances as well.
Gwen Herndon’s Enduring Influence
Gwen Herndon was the lifeblood of Handlebar J for over 40 years. Sadly, dementia and Alzheimer’s took her from us in 2017. While her physical presence is missed, Gwen and Brick’s legacy continues to guide the family business, and Handlebar J remains a beloved local institution.
Thank You for Your Support
We are deeply grateful to our guests for their continued support of this one-of-a-kind Scottsdale gem. The Herndon family invites you to come enjoy the atmosphere, great food, and live music that Gwen and Brick worked so hard to build and maintain. We look forward to welcoming you to “Gwen’s” Handlebar J!
