College Avenue Baptist Church offers a welcoming and supportive environment where people from all walks of life can grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. We are committed to providing sound biblical teaching, meaningful worship experiences, and opportunities for community connection through Life Groups and kids’ programs. Our mission is to know, love, and follow Jesus, and we invite you to join us on this journey of faith, fellowship, and service.

Our History

College Avenue Baptist Church has a rich history that began in 1897 when it was originally founded as The Swedish Baptist Church. Located near 16th & E Streets in downtown San Diego, the church was a small, tight-knit community. As the church grew, we joined a larger association of churches known as the Baptist General Conference, which is now called CONVERGE.org.

In 1935, the church made a pivotal transition, shifting to English for its services to better serve a growing and diverse congregation. In 1940, we moved to our current location just south of San Diego State University. Over the decades, our church has continued to thrive and adapt to the needs of the community, while staying true to our core values of biblical teaching, fellowship, and outreach.

In February 2023, we were excited to welcome our new senior pastor, Chris Hilken. Under his leadership, College Avenue Baptist Church is focused on reaching our community with the gospel and helping people of all ages grow in their faith.

Our Community and Vision

At College Avenue Baptist Church, we are more than just a building – we are a community of believers committed to growing together in our faith. We believe that the Christian journey is not meant to be walked alone, which is why we offer Life Groups where people can connect, share, and learn from one another in an intimate setting. Our Life Groups focus on applying biblical principles to everyday life, and they provide a supportive space for personal growth and discipleship.

Our church is also passionate about equipping the next generation of believers, and our kids’ programs are designed to teach children about God’s love, truth, and purpose. Through engaging activities, lessons, and events, we aim to help children grow in their faith from an early age.

Pastor Chris Hilken: A Vision for the Future

Senior Pastor Chris Hilken, who joined College Avenue Baptist Church in February 2023, brings a fresh vision and passion for reaching people with the message of Jesus Christ. Chris’s leadership is rooted in his deep commitment to the Bible and to helping others experience the love and grace of God. With a heart for community, he seeks to foster an environment where everyone, regardless of their background, can find a place to belong and grow.

Under Pastor Chris’s guidance, College Avenue Baptist Church is continuing its legacy of faith and service while embracing new opportunities to impact the city of San Diego and beyond. Whether through Sunday services, outreach programs, or everyday ministry, we strive to live out our mission of making disciples who love and serve others.
