Chappell Hill Historical Society: Celebrating History, Culture, and Community
Welcome to Chappell Hill
Nestled in a small village, Chappell Hill is a place rich in history, culture, and charm. Known for its historic museum, beautiful bluebonnets, unique scarecrows, country weddings, and more, this picturesque town offers a wonderful blend of the old and the new. Whether you’re interested in exploring the past, enjoying the scenic beauty, or attending one of our famous festivals, there’s something for everyone to experience.
Our Historic Museum: A Journey Through Time
The Chappell Hill Historical Museum is the heart of our community’s history. Featuring a vast collection of art and culture from the 19th century, the museum delves into the rich past of Chappell Hill—from its origins and role in the Civil War to Reconstruction. A highlight of the collection is the African American folk art by Rev. Johnnie Swearingen, showcasing local culture. We also celebrate the Polish heritage of the area, with exhibits dedicated to this vibrant aspect of our history. The museum offers rotating exhibits in a charming refurbished auditorium, providing visitors with an ever-changing glimpse into Chappell Hill’s past.
Weddings at Historic Providence Baptist Church
If you’re planning a wedding, the historic Providence Baptist Church is now a beautiful non-denominational wedding chapel. This charming wooden structure, located in the heart of our historic downtown, provides a perfect setting for couples looking for a unique and meaningful location for their special day.
Group Tours of Historic Sites
Want to learn more about Chappell Hill’s history? We offer group tours of our historic sites by appointment. These tours allow you to explore our community’s rich past with a knowledgeable guide. A small fee applies, and group size is limited, so be sure to call ahead for more information and to book your tour.
Chappell Hill Festivals: Bluebonnet & Scarecrow Celebrations
The Chappell Hill Historical Society is proud to host two major festivals each year, both of which support the activities of the Historical Society and the museum.
Chappell Hill Bluebonnet Festival:
Held on the second Saturday of April, this festival celebrates the beauty of the bluebonnet flower and the start of spring.
Chappell Hill Scarecrow Festival:
Taking place on the second Saturday of October, this festival is a beloved local tradition, celebrating the fall season with more than 250 juried exhibitors, live entertainment, delicious food, and family-friendly activities.

Both the Bluebonnet and Scarecrow Festivals are free to attend (with a small parking fee), offering a wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture and support the activities of the Chappell Hill Historical Society. The festivals feature juried exhibitors, delicious food, live music, and activities for the whole family, including a Children’s Activity Corner with pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, and more.
Our History: Celebrating 50 Years of Community
Established in 1977, the Chappell Hill Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of our community. This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our society, a milestone that marks decades of commitment to education, culture, and community.
