Our Humble Beginnings in 1976
Over 40 years ago, two brothers, Elias and George Abdallah, set out to fill a void in Houston’s culinary landscape. With a passion for their Lebanese heritage and a vision to share the rich flavors of Lebanon, they opened the city’s first Lebanese bakery right in their own backyard. In 1976, there was no Lebanese bread to be found in Houston, and the Abdallah brothers decided to change that. What began with a small operation consisting of a couple of acres of land and a warehouse soon became the foundation for what would grow into a beloved institution.
A Small Operation That Grew Fast
At first, Elias and George’s bakery was a local treasure. They were not just baking pita bread; they were introducing a taste of Lebanon to the Houston community. With dedication and hard work, the brothers started shipping their products across the United States, and their bakery became a go-to source for fresh Lebanese bread. This “small operation” soon became a staple in the lives of many, especially for those within the Lebanese immigrant community. The welcoming, family-oriented service was a cornerstone of their business—customers could drop by at any time, knock on the front door, and be greeted by a family member who would personally guide them to the warehouse for their bread.
The Birth of the American Dream
Abdallah’s represents more than just a bakery; it symbolizes the realization of the American Dream. What started as a humble venture in a backyard grew into a successful business that not only brought Lebanese bread to the city but also built a lasting connection with the community. Elias and George’s passion for bringing authentic Lebanese flavors to Houston, combined with their tireless work ethic, helped turn Abdallah’s into a recognized name across the city. The success of their bakery made it clear that their dream had truly come to life.
A Milestone in 1990: The First Lebanese Restaurant in Houston
By 1990, the brothers decided to take the next big step: they moved their operation to its current location at 3939 Hillcroft Ave. They expanded beyond just the bakery to open a full-scale Lebanese restaurant. Not only was Abdallah’s the first Lebanese restaurant of its kind in Houston, but it also became a place where the community could experience authentic Lebanese food, from savory dishes to fresh, high-quality ingredients and Lebanese grocery items. The family’s mission was clear—to serve the community while staying true to their roots, bringing a taste of Lebanon to the heart of Houston.
Abdallah’s Today: A Legacy of Authenticity
Today, Abdallah’s is a thriving family business that stands as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and dedication of Elias and George. While they may have started small, their restaurant has become a beloved institution in Houston’s food scene. Known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and delicious, authentic Lebanese cuisine, Abdallah’s continues to serve generations of loyal customers. Visitors to Abdallah’s often say it’s the kind of place that feels like family—no matter who you are or where you come from.
