A Rich History: The Founding of West Angeles Church of God In Christ

West Angeles Church of God In Christ (COGIC) was founded in 1943 by Elder Clarence E. Church. The church’s first sanctuary was a humble storefront located in the heart of Los Angeles on Vermont Avenue. This small yet significant start laid the foundation for what would grow into one of the most prominent congregations in Southern California.

Elder Church’s vision and leadership in the early years guided the church through its first steps, but as with any great endeavor, the church’s journey would soon require new leadership to help it reach its fullest potential.

Leadership Transition and the Rise of Elder Charles E. Blake

After the passing of Elder Clarence E. Church in 1968, the search for a new minister to lead West Angeles Church began. In 1969, Elder Charles E. Blake, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, was appointed as the new pastor. At the time, Elder Blake had already been serving in San Diego under his father, the late Bishop J.A. Blake, and brought with him a wealth of experience and dynamic leadership.

Expansion and Development in the 1970s

During the 1970s, West Angeles Church experienced a period of significant growth. As the church continued to attract more members, Elder Blake expanded the ministry to meet the needs of the growing congregation. One of the key developments during this time was the founding of the West Angeles Christian Academy. This addition to the church’s ministry provided education and support to families within the community, reinforcing the church’s commitment to nurturing both the spiritual and educational needs of its members.

A New Church Building in 1981

In 1981, the church’s vision for a larger sanctuary came to fruition with the completion of a 1,000-seat church building located at 3045 Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles, which would later become known as the North Campus. This beautiful new sanctuary, built on the site of a former furniture store, provided ample space for the growing congregation and allowed West Angeles Church to continue its mission of serving the Los Angeles community.

A Vision for the Future

As we move forward, West Angeles Church of God In Christ remains committed to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the vision of its founding leaders. The church continues to serve the community with a focus on outreach, education, and worship. With the leadership of Elder Charles E. Blake, West Angeles Church has become a cornerstone of faith in Los Angeles, bringing hope, love, and transformation to countless lives.
