Culinary Delights at Jingu House
Jingu House, located within the garden, provides a delightful culinary experience in a peaceful setting. Offering a unique blend of Asian cuisine with a San Antonio twist, guests can enjoy a relaxing meal while taking in the beauty of the garden surroundings.
A Rich History Steeped in Tradition
The Japanese Tea Garden is not only a beautiful landmark but also a piece of San Antonio history. Originally a limestone quarry and cement factory, the garden has evolved into one of the city’s most beloved attractions. In 1916, Park Commissioner Ray Lambert envisioned transforming the quarry into a Japanese-style garden, complete with a waterfall and koi pond. His vision was inspired by the Japanese art and fashion that had gained popularity in the American West in the early 20th century. With the help of local citizens and businesses, Lambert’s vision became a reality.
Design and Transformation
The quarry was reshaped into a complex featuring walkways, stone arch bridges, an island, and a traditional Japanese-style pavilion. The garden became known as the “lily pond” and was enhanced by local residents who donated flower bulbs. Over time, the garden continued to grow and evolve, becoming a cherished part of the city’s cultural landscape.
Restoration and Modern-Day Beauty
In recent years, the San Antonio Parks Foundation undertook extensive restoration work to enhance the infrastructure of the Japanese Tea Garden. This included improvements to walkways, piping, filtration, wall repairs, and pond sealing. The revitalized garden now features a year-round floral display, shaded walkways, stone bridges, a stunning 60-foot waterfall, and koi-filled ponds. As one of the most photographed spots in San Antonio, it continues to thrive and captivate visitors.
Honoring the Jingu Family Legacy
The Japanese Tea Garden is also a tribute to the Jingu family, whose artistic endeavors continue to inspire and enrich the cultural heritage of San Antonio. Through four generations, the Jingu family has left a lasting legacy, creating poetry, flower arrangements, ceramics, and more. The family’s dedication to the art of tea and culture is honored at the Jingu House within the garden. Their laughter, creativity, and joy are reflected in the peaceful and welcoming atmosphere of the garden.
Supporting Local Artists and the Community
To further preserve the Jingu family’s legacy, the San Antonio Parks Foundation supports ongoing projects at the Japanese Tea Garden that enhance visitors’ experiences. These projects also provide opportunities for artists in San Antonio and beyond, fostering creativity and connecting the community to the garden’s rich cultural history.
