About The Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

The Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a 120-acre property rich in history and natural beauty. Once home to the Humphries Gold Mining Company from 1944 to 1961, the area was primarily used for strip mining minerals needed for titanium production. Despite its name, no gold was mined here. The mining activities severely impacted the soils and vegetation in parts of the area, but over time, these areas have begun to recover.

In the early 1970s, the City of Jacksonville purchased the land to use as a passive recreation and open space buffer for the Arlington East treatment facility, a move funded by an EPA grant. However, for the next 30 years, the property remained largely unused, suffering from illegal dumping and neglect.

In 2004, local citizens began working with the City to transform the land into an arboretum. After securing a lease, the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens officially opened its doors to the public in November 2008. At the time of its opening, the Arboretum had a paved parking area, the Lake Loop, and trails such as Jones Creek and Ravine. The community played a key role in developing the Arboretum, with volunteers constructing all trails, benches, boardwalks, and picnic tables.
