About Us – Bonham Exchange
When you walk through the halls of the Bonham Exchange, you’re not just entering one of San Antonio’s hottest nightclubs—you’re traveling back in time. With a history that dates back to 1891, our venue has seen decades of change, from a German athletic association to the USO office, to a vibrant nightlife spot. This is a place where history and modern-day nightlife converge.
Turn Verein & Turner Hall
In 1891, Turn Verein, a German athletic association, purchased the land on which the Bonham Exchange sits today. On April 18, 1892, Turner Hall opened its doors as a grand building that housed a bowling alley, gymnasium, and ballroom. Designed by architect James Wahrenberger, this 20,000 square-foot structure was constructed using pressed Chicago brick and Kerrville limestone. The grand opening was a memorable social event, setting the stage for many years of history to come.
The USO Era
By 1942, during the height of World War II, the U.S. government took control of the building, transforming it into a USO office. The rise of anti-German sentiment led to the removal of German markings and ornate stained glass windows, which were covered up. For nearly three decades, the building served as the USO office before being repurposed as a storage facility for the post office in the 1970s.
The Bonham Exchange: A New Chapter
In 1980, the Bonham Exchange was reborn under the direction of downtown developer Arthur P. Veltman. With his vision and a costly renovation, the historic Turner Hall was transformed into a vibrant nightclub. The Bonham Exchange opened its doors to the public in July 1981, echoing the grand opening celebration of nearly a century before.
San Antonio’s Premier Nightlife Destination
Over 120 years old, the Bonham Exchange has established itself as one of the premier nightlife spots in San Antonio. Known for hosting legendary entertainers such as Tina Turner, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, and RuPaul, the club has become a cultural hub for both local patrons and tourists. We’ve also been host to celebrity sightings from figures like Prince, Puff Daddy, and Patrick Swayze, as well as cast parties for major Broadway shows.
Renovation & Commitment to Excellence
In 2012, the Bonham Exchange underwent a massive renovation, restoring and updating over 10,000 square feet of space. The floors were refinished, the venue was rewired and replumbed, and the décor was revamped to meet the evolving needs of our guests. Every update was made with you in mind, and we’re proud to provide an improved space that keeps the energy and charm of our storied past alive.
Our Mission
At Bonham Exchange, our mission is clear: to provide a safe, inclusive space where people can come together to enjoy music, dancing, and a vibrant atmosphere. We strive to evolve with the times while maintaining a place where all individuals—regardless of sex, race, ethnicity, age, or sexual orientation—can enjoy each other’s company and have a great time. We are more than just a nightclub; we are a community.
