About Us – LA HOMEFARM

Our Roots: From Garden to Market

LA HOMEFARM is the first brick-and-mortar store from the visionaries behind Edible Gardens LA, Lauri Kranz and Dean Kuipers. Nestled in Glassell Park, this neighborhood grocery and farm market is more than a store—it’s a hub for fresh, naturally grown produce, vibrant flowers, and carefully curated home and garden goods. Drawing from their own urban farm and trusted local farmers, LA HOMEFARM offers an unparalleled selection of organic and responsibly sourced food and products that reflect their commitment to sustainability, community, and health.

A Marketplace of Freshness and Artistry

At LA HOMEFARM, every product tells a story. Our shelves are stocked with farm-fresh produce, naturally grown flowers, and pantry essentials—from dairy and non-dairy milk, cheese, and eggs to unique pastas, heirloom grains, dried beans, oils, and sauces. We take pride in offering hard-to-find imported foods and a thoughtful variety of gluten-free products. Our offerings extend beyond food, featuring artisanal home and garden items such as handcrafted ceramics, dishware, linens, artwork, garden tools, aprons, and cookbooks. Every item is chosen to enrich your home and dining experience, blending functionality with beauty.

Grab & Go: Wholesome Convenience

Understanding the demands of a busy lifestyle, we’ve created a Grab & Go section that brings convenience without compromising on quality. Enjoy freshly prepared sandwiches, bake-at-home pasta dishes and pizzas, baked goods, and frozen treats sourced from the most talented makers in Southern California. Each product is carefully selected to provide nourishing, flavorful options for those on the move or looking for a simple, delicious meal at home.

Our Story – A Labor of Love and Community

Planting the Seed

In 2019, Lauri Kranz and Dean Kuipers embarked on a journey to cultivate a small urban farm in Glassell Park. Lauri’s company, Edible Gardens LA, had been designing and maintaining organic edible gardens for families, schools, and institutions since 2005. Dean, a journalist dedicated to ecological issues, brought his passion for sustainability and farming to the project. This small farm became a testing ground for growing unique produce and supporting local chefs.

Growing Through Adversity

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 turned their passion into a community mission. With grocery stores emptied and farmers’ markets shuttered, friends and neighbors reached out for help accessing fresh produce. Simultaneously, local farmers faced immense losses due to restaurant closures. In response, Lauri and Dean swiftly organized farm box deliveries to bridge this gap. What began as a grassroots effort quickly expanded, leading to the purchase of a delivery van and the establishment of a reliable food distribution network.

From Delivery to Destination

By fall 2021, the desire to reconnect with their community led Lauri and Dean to open the LA HOMEFARM store. This physical space allowed them to continue supporting local farmers while offering customers a place to experience the warmth and abundance of a community-driven market. The store has become a beloved neighborhood destination, made possible by the unwavering support of friends and patrons who believed in their mission.

Our Mission – Growing Toward a Healthier Future

Access to Local, Responsible Food

At LA HOMEFARM, our mission is to make fresh, locally grown, and responsibly produced food accessible to everyone. We envision a future where every community can grow its own nutritious, affordable, and culturally relevant farm goods. To achieve this, we actively promote the development of local distribution networks and urban farming initiatives, especially in underserved neighborhoods lacking access to farmers’ markets or fresh produce.

Food Equity and Environmental Responsibility

We believe that food equity is a matter of health, justice, and sustainability. Supporting local farmers not only strengthens food security but also helps combat climate change by reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance food transportation. Our work is rooted in the belief that fresh, healthy food should be a right, not a privilege.
