About Saint Mary’s Church

Saint Mary’s Church holds a special place in the heart of the Lower East Side. Founded in 1826 on Sheriff Street, our church was a sanctuary for Irish immigrants who arrived in New York City seeking refuge from the oppressive conditions in their homeland. The story of our church’s beginning is one of resilience, faith, and community-building.

In 1831, tragedy struck when the church was burned down by the anti-Catholic “Know Nothing” party. However, this devastating event led to the construction of a new church on Grand Street, which became the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Archdiocese of New York. The site was chosen for its elevated position, making it a beacon of faith and hope for the community.

Saint Mary’s Church has stood as a symbol of faith and perseverance for generations. Over the years, the church has served as a hub for immigrants, particularly Irish, Hispanic, and Italian communities. Despite facing obstacles, including religious persecution and adversity, our church has remained steadfast in its mission to provide a place of worship, solace, and hope for all.

Bicentennial Celebration in 2026

As we approach our Bicentennial celebration in 2026, Saint Mary’s Church will commemorate 200 years of service to the community. This milestone is a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of our congregation, as well as the important role the church has played in the cultural and spiritual fabric of Lower Manhattan.

Saint Mary Bell

The Bell of Saint Mary’s holds a special place in the church’s history. It was the first bell hung in a Catholic Church in New York, and it continues to ring every day at noon, as well as during the Pentecost. The bell calls the faithful to prayer and reflects the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary (Luke 1:26-38).

Ancestral Research

Saint Mary’s Church holds an extensive collection of sacramental records dating back to the early 1800s, making it an invaluable resource for those seeking to trace their ancestral roots. If you have ancestors who lived in the Lower East Side, we are here to help you uncover their history.
