Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral
Old Saint Patrick’s Cathedral has been a cornerstone of Catholic life in New York City for over two centuries. Founded in 1809, the parish has continually served the diverse and evolving spiritual needs of the community. Throughout its history, the church has been a beacon for immigrants, especially Italians, Hispanics, and Chinese, who settled in the nearby neighborhoods of “Little Italy” and beyond. Today, it remains an important spiritual and cultural landmark in the heart of New York’s vibrant Lower East Side.
Embracing the Past, Celebrating the Future
In 2009, the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral began a year-long celebration marking its 200th anniversary. Under the leadership of Monsignor Donald Sakano, the parish community united to reflect on the church’s rich history, encapsulated by the theme “Embracing the Future, as We Celebrate the Past.” This bicentennial celebration culminated in a special Mass on June 7, 2009, during which Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced that Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral would be submitted to the Vatican for designation as a Basilica. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI conferred this esteemed title on the church, affirming its significance in the history of the Catholic Church in New York.
A Home for the Faithful in Life and Death
In keeping with its longstanding tradition of serving the spiritual needs of the community, the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is also providing a final resting place for the faithful departed. While the practice of burial in parish graveyards is no longer common, the cathedral has revived this tradition in a modern form. In 2011, the church began offering niches for cremated remains in a series of columbaria. These niches are located both on the cathedral’s grounds and within the catacombs below the church. The project was initiated under the guidance of Monsignor Sakano and Parish Manager Christopher Flatz, and it continues to thrive with the help of Revenue Works Inc., ensuring that future generations can find eternal peace on the historic grounds of the Basilica.
Preserving the Legacy
The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral remains at the forefront of combining tradition with innovation, ensuring that the spiritual well-being of its congregation is maintained for generations to come. With the columbarium project continuing to grow, the church continues its mission to serve the faithful in life, in death, and in the life beyond. By honoring its rich history while looking toward the future, the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral continues to be a beacon of faith, offering a place of peace, reflection, and eternal rest for all who seek it.
