A Home with History
The Rittenhouse, home to the Library Bar, has a rich and storied history. The hotel is located on a square named after the esteemed Philadelphian David Rittenhouse. Its modern layout was designed by the Beaux-Arts architect Paul Cret in 1913. However, the property has had many incarnations over the years, starting as a mansion owned by A.J. and Lois Buchanan Cassatt, who were prominent figures in the city’s social and economic life.
The Mansion and the Cassatt Family
The original mansion on the site belonged to A.J. Cassatt, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and his wife, Lois. They were an influential family in Philadelphia’s social scene, with A.J. also overseeing the railroad’s monumental extension to New York City, which included the construction of the now-defunct Penn Station. A.J.’s sister, Mary Cassatt, was a renowned painter whose work was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1868. Today, Mary’s artistic legacy is honored at The Rittenhouse, where the Mary Cassatt Lounge carries her name.
A Historic Hotel with Modern Comforts
In the 20th century, the Cassatt family sold the property to the Episcopal Church of Pennsylvania, which made it its headquarters. The building also housed the Academy of Notre Dame, where notable figures, including the Barrymore family, received their education. The hotel as we know it today began taking shape in the late 1960s when architect Donald Reiff designed the current building. His design maximized the views of Rittenhouse Square, ensuring that guests could enjoy breathtaking sights of the city. The hotel officially opened its doors in 1989, becoming one of Philadelphia’s most historic and luxurious landmarks.
A Blend of Historic Elegance and Modern Luxury
Though the original design of the hotel still echoes through its layout, the Rittenhouse has undergone striking upgrades that combine the building’s rich history with modern luxury. It stands as a testament to the evolution of Philadelphia’s architectural and cultural landscape. When you visit, you’ll experience not only the timeless elegance of the hotel but also the contemporary comforts that make it a top-tier destination for visitors and locals alike.
